Every education service provider on the state's CHOOSE Act list is on CHOOSEActAL, searchable by category, city and name. Many listings already show what the provider offers, the grades it serves and how to reach it, so you can compare providers before you spend your student's ESA.
The Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR) approves every education service provider in the CHOOSE Act, and its public list tells you one thing about each of them: the provider is approved. It does not tell you what a provider teaches, which grades it serves, whether it meets in person or online, or how to reach it. Those are the questions a family actually has.
CHOOSEActAL starts from that list and fills in the rest. For many providers, the platform has already researched what they offer, the grades they serve and how to contact them. Providers who activate their listing write their own description and keep it current, and activated listings rank higher in search.
Families on the platform search by category more than any other way, and curriculum leads by a wide margin. It took 44% of category searches in the data behind Alabama: State of the CHOOSE Act, more than double online learning at 21%. Location comes next. Search by city, or by distance from home, and the results narrow to the tutors, microschools and therapy practices close enough to visit.
Location tells only part of the story. Fifty-five percent of listed providers are based outside Alabama, and in curriculum the share rises to 88%, because most curriculum publishers and online programs serve families statewide. When a provider's city does not matter for what you need, search by category alone.
ALDOR lists $7,000 per participating student enrolled in a participating school and $2,000 per participating student in a home education program, capped at $4,000 per family. ALDOR works with ClassWallet to distribute the funds, so families pay providers through their ClassWallet accounts.
Providers apply to ALDOR, not to CHOOSEActAL, and a provider appears here once the state has approved it. A provider you cannot find has not reached the list yet, and it is worth asking whether it has applied.
